Luxury Good Market -Christian LACROIX Haute Couture It is over !

 Exuberant and artistic French couturier files for court protection from the creditors,  in March this year, and was put in receivership (chapter eleven) until yesterday.

The volontary petition, was filed with the court of Paris. Lacroix became one of the first victims of the global crisis. 

Founded in 1987 by Bernard Arnault, the concept was to start with Haute Couture , and then to develop a range of ready to wear apparel, accessories and Fragances. That worked for Dior and Chanel both in the hands of Arnault, it didn’t worked for Lacroix.

The company  had years of success, but never made profit or even broke even.

Mr Arnault sold Lacroix in 2005 , to the Fallic brothers, a family  business known for its duty free chain, based in Florida.

The Falic Group tried to refocus the exhuberant luxury  brand at its the peak, doing away with the lower priced clothing and jeans.

Since Lacroix was put in receivership, the owners and the manager Mr Topiol, have been in discussion with potential  partners including a wealthy Cheikh  from the Emirate of Ajman,  and the Bernard Krieff  Consultant  Group France .

As far as we know, Lacroix was badly hit in the United States , where he had opened two stores  in Las Vegas and in New York.

Sales worldwide were down 35% , and last known amount of  loss was 10 million for an overall revenue of 30 million Euros.

Accumulated losses since the launch of the company reached  $150 millions.

Biggest players in luxury sector are being hurt, LV stopped a plan to open a store in Tokyo, Chanel laid off 200 part time employees, Versace annouced that revenue fell more than 15% .

Besides the Christian Lacroix Brand belonging to the Falic Group, Mr Lacroix has his own XCLX company, for which he has created hotel interiors ( Mr Lacroix Owns l’Hotel du Petit Moulin , rue de Poitou in the Marais in Paris)  he has also designed for French TGV, Theater and Operas.

Luxury faces its first recession in six years, but long term optimism as new luxury markets including China are projected to surge.

Once thought immune to the ebbs and flow of economic fluctuations, this market  feels the effects  of 2008-2009 worldwide  economic downturn.

Over the next five years, we are still looking forward  to a surge in spending by high net worth individuals on luxury goods in emerging markets  including  Brazil, India and China, no one knows for Russia.

Luxury good sales reached $ 175 billions in 2008, a decline of 7% is expected  in 2009 .

December 1st,  « Continuation plan » was decided by the court !   Only The trade  brand « Christian Lacroix »  will survive , One hundred out of 110 employees will be laid off .

Falic brothers will pay back the debts within 10 years ( 10 million per year)

La maison    de l’Exhubérant et Artistique  Christian  Lacroix qui a déposé son bilan en mars 2009, après avoir vu ses ventes baisser de 35% , et après avoir accusé une perte de 10 millions d’Euros pour une chiffre d’affaires de 30 million , était toujours a la recherche de nouveaux partenaires en début de semaine.

Les deux repreneurs potentiels, Bernard Krieff Consultant et un Le Cheikh  de l’ Emirat d’Ajman ,  ayant semble t il jeté l’éponge.

Depuis leur achat au Groupe Bernard Arnault en 2005, les frères Falic propriétaires d’une chaîne de duty free shops aux Eats Unis, , ont semble t il beaucoup investi, et ont ouvert deux boutiques , une à Las Vegas, une à New york.

Christian Lacroix depuis sa création  en 1987 par Bernard Arnault, n’a jamais fait de profit.

Les ventes de parfum sous licence se sont effondrées,  et la ligne de lingerie a  quasiment disparue des boutiques ,  depuis la faillitte de la Société Internationale de Lingerie,( SIL) qui fabriquait pour Lacroix, Galliano, Dior, Sonia Rykiel, Cacharel .

Les Frères Falic qui recherchaient depuis longtemps à revendre ce « coup de coeur » très onéreux, n’ont semble t il pas retrouvé de repreneur.

Christian Lacroix, qui ne posséde plus sa marque,  vends ses prestations sous la marque XCLX, il a redesigné des Hotels ( dont le sien L’Hotel du Petit Moulin rue de Poitou à Paris dans le Marais) il  a aussi  crée les  uniformes du TGV,  ainsi que des décors de théatres et d’Opéra.

Les ventes mondiales de produits de luxe ont  atteint 175 milliards de dollars en 2008. On s’attend à une baisse de ce marché de 7% en 2009.

Dans les cinq prochaines années, il est prévu de fortes hausses de ventes de produits de luxe dans les marchés émergents, dont le Brésil , l’Inde et bien sur la Chine.
